Sample Retention System

A sample retention system is a set of containers, storage conditions, and tracking procedures used to preserve biological specimens for later analysis, verification, or reference. It works by maintaining sample identity and integrity through secure containment, appropriate environmental control, and documented handling over a defined retention period. In biology, these systems support reproducible research, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and the investigation of unexpected results. Effective retention enables researchers to compare archived material with new samples, confirm experimental findings, and protect valuable specimens when biological materials are limited or difficult to collect.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

2026

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to assess mitochondrial calcium retention capacity by monitoring real-time changes in fluorescence as mitochondria uptake calcium. This assay is useful for studying mitochondrial function and calcium-related processes, including apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Our goals were to design, manufacture and test ferromagnetic stents for endothelial cell capture. Ten stents were tested for fracture and 10 more stents were tested for retained magnetism. Finally, 10 stents were tested in-vitro and 8 more stents were implanted in 4 pigs to show cell capture and retention.
