Sash Height

Sash height is the vertical position or opening of a movable front panel on a laboratory enclosure, such as a fume hood or biological safety cabinet, and it affects both user access and containment. Changing the sash height alters the opening through which air enters, influencing airflow velocity, pressure balance, and the enclosure’s ability to control aerosols or hazardous vapors. In biology laboratories, maintaining the specified sash height supports reliable protection during sample preparation, cell culture, and other procedures involving potentially hazardous materials. Correct adjustment also helps preserve equipment performance, reduce unnecessary airflow demand, and promote consistent laboratory safety practices.

2017

Multilayer microfluidic devices often involve the fabrication of master molds with complex geometries for functionality. This article presents a complete protocol for multi-step photolithography with valves and variable height features tunable to any application. As a demonstration, we fabricate a microfluidic droplet generator capable of producing hydrogel beads.

Sit-to-stand-and-walk from 120% Knee Height: A Novel Approach to Assess Dynamic Postural Control Independent of Lead-limb

Here, we present a novel protocol to measure positional stability at key events during the sit-to-stand-to-walk using the center-of-pressure to the whole-body-center-of-mass distance. This was derived from the force platform and three-dimensional motion-capture technology. The paradigm is reliable and can be utilized for the assessment of neurologically compromised individuals.

Fume Hoods and Laminar Flow Cabinets

2023

Robert M. Rioux & William A. Elliott, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Fume hoods and laminar flow cabinets are engineering controls that operate under similar principles. Both use a constant flow of air to prevent contamination of the laboratory environment and its inhabitants. Fume hoods prevent hazardous substances from exiting the hood workspace, whereas laminar flow cabinets prevent contaminants from entering the cabinet workspace. Fume hoods are ventilation systems...

An Introduction to Working in the Hood

2023

Hoods are a common class of instrument, which act as a protective enclosure for various types of laboratory experiments. They serve to shield experimental samples from the environment, as well as to protect the researcher from hazardous or infectious samples. “The Hood” is a term that can include laminar flow benches, fume hoods, as well as tissue culture hoods or biosafety cabinets. All hoods operate based on the principle of laminar flow and have the same basic components, including a...

Synthesis of Nine-atom Deltahedral Zintl Ions of Germanium and their Functionalization with Organic Groups

We present the high-temperature synthesis of intermetallic precursors K4Ge9, their dissolution in ethylenediamine to form Ge94- deltahedral Zintl ions, and the reaction of the clusters with alkynes to form organo-Zintl ions. The latter are characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry in solutions and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state.
