Statistical Hypothesis

A statistical hypothesis is a testable claim about a population, parameter, or relationship that researchers evaluate using sample data and probability. In biology, investigators typically formulate a null hypothesis representing no effect or association and an alternative hypothesis representing the proposed difference, then use a statistical test to calculate how compatible the observations are with the null hypothesis. Significance levels, p-values, confidence intervals, and effect sizes help quantify uncertainty and distinguish meaningful patterns from sampling variation. Statistical hypotheses support rigorous analysis of experiments and observational studies, including comparisons of treatments, gene expression, species traits, and ecological relationships.

Statistical Hypothesis Testing

2024

Hypothesis testing is a critical statistical procedure facilitating informed, evidence-based decisions. It begins with a hypothesis, which is a tentative explanation, or a prediction about a population parameter. This hypothesis can be either a null hypothesis (H0), indicating no effect or difference, or an alternative hypothesis (Ha), suggesting an effect or difference. Statistical significance measures the probability that an observed result occurred by chance. If this probability, known as...

Statistical Inference Techniques in Hypothesis Testing: Parametric Versus Nonparametric Data

2024

Statistical inference techniques, paramount in hypothesis testing, differentiate into two broad categories: parametric and nonparametric statistics. Parametric statistics, as the name suggests, assumes that data follow a specific distribution, often a normal distribution. This assumption enables robust hypothesis testing and estimation. Parametric methods, like the Student's t-test or Goodness-of-fit test, are frequently employed in biostatistics due to their robustness. For instance, comparing...

Here we describe a protocol using the web-based drug repurposing hypothesis generation tool: "RE:fine Drugs." This protocol can be modified to a user's preferences at the level of the query type (gene, drug or disease) and/or the range of available advanced options.

Visual Statistical Learning

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The visual environment contains massive amounts of information involving the relations between objects in space and time; certain objects are more likely to appear in the vicinity of other objects. Learning these regularities can support a wide array of visual processing, including object recognition. Unsurprisingly, then, humans appear to learn these regularities automatically, quickly, and without conscious awareness. The name...

What is a Hypothesis?

2023

A hypothesis can be a simple sentence or statement about a property or any phenomenon observed or predicted for a population. It is usually a claim about a property of the population. It can be stated for any field observations or experiments. A hypothesis statement cannot be said to be right or wrong as it is merely a statement. It needs to be tested through an elaborate data collection process and an appropriate statistical test. A hypothesis should be a general but not a vague statement. It...
