Surgical Transplantation

Surgical transplantation is the operative transfer of cells, tissues, or organs from one location or individual to another to replace damaged structures and restore biological function. Success depends on establishing blood supply, preserving graft viability, and managing immune recognition, because recipient immune cells can identify donor antigens and trigger rejection. Transplants may be autologous, using the patient’s own tissue, or allogeneic, using tissue from another person and often requiring immunosuppressive therapy. In biology and medicine, transplantation supports treatment of organ failure, severe injury, and tissue loss while providing a model for studying immune compatibility, regeneration, and long-term graft integration.
