Swing Rotor

A swing rotor is a centrifuge rotor that holds tubes vertically while stationary and allows them to swing outward to a nearly horizontal position during rotation. This movement creates a uniform sedimentation path, enabling particles, cells, organelles, or macromolecules to separate according to size, density, and buoyant behavior, often through a density gradient. In biology, swing rotors are widely used for cell fractionation, organelle isolation, nucleic acid purification, and separation of layered samples with distinct interfaces. Their horizontal tube position helps form sharply defined bands or compact pellets, supporting reproducible sample processing and analysis in research and clinical laboratories.

The Swing Equation

2024

The Swing Equation is a fundamental tool in power system dynamics, especially for analyzing the behavior of generating units like three-phase synchronous generators. This equation emerges from applying Newton's second law to the rotor of a generator, encompassing factors such as inertia, angular acceleration, and the interplay between mechanical and electrical torques. In a steady-state operation, the mechanical torque (Τm) supplied to the generator is balanced by the electrical torque (Τe)...

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

Ye's Swing Technique for Small-incision Lenticule Extraction Surgery

2025

We introduced an optimized surgical approach for small incision lenticule extraction, termed the Ye's Swing Technique. This technique enables the surgeon to perform lenticule separation and extraction more easily while minimizing the risk of incision-edge tears and lenticule fragmentation. The results of this study proved its safety and efficacy.
