Synergist Muscles

Synergist muscles are muscles that work together during a movement, helping a prime mover produce force or preventing unwanted motion at nearby joints. They act through coordinated contraction: one muscle may assist the agonist directly, while another stabilizes a joint or neutralizes a secondary action, improving the movement’s direction and control. Understanding these roles is central to functional anatomy and biomechanics because muscle actions depend on coordinated groups rather than isolated muscles. Synergist muscles are therefore important in analyzing posture, exercise technique, motor control, and rehabilitation, where restoring balanced coordination can improve movement efficiency and reduce mechanical strain.

Synergistic Photobiomodulation with a Dual-Wavelength Laser in an In Vitro Disease Model

Divide the transwell system into five groups that undergo various treatments. The first group serves as the control and consists of a co-culture of neuroblastoma and microglia cells. In the second group, treat the co-culturer with fibrillar β-amyloid (fAβ) alone. fAβ induces damage in neuroblastoma cells. In the third group, treat neuroblastoma cells with an 808-nanometer laser, then co-culture them with untreated microglia. The laser reduces oxidative stress, improving neuronal survival. In the...

Synergistic Effect of Intracranial and Intraperitoneal Delivery of Analgesic Drugs on Thermal Pain Response in a Rat

Source: Martinez, E., et al. Intracranial Pharmacotherapy and Pain Assays in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the intracranial administration of an analgesic drug in an anesthetized rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula in the prefrontal cortex. An additional analgesic drug is co-administered intraperitoneally. Following recovery, the rat’s thermal pain response is assessed using Hargreave’s apparatus, where paw withdrawal latency is measured to evaluate the analgesic...

Ex Vivo Assessment of Contractility, Fatigability and Alternans in Isolated Skeletal Muscles

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Synergistic Antimicrobial Effect of Membrane-Targeting Compounds on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Take suspensions of an antibiotic-resistant strain of a pathogenic bacterium.Treat one suspension with a short, membrane-disrupting antibiotic compound and the other with both the short compound and a longer, membrane-intercalating compound.Incubate both suspensions with agitation. These compounds mimic the lipid bilayer structure, enabling their spontaneous insertion into bacterial membranes. The short compound spans only part of the membrane’s thickness, creating a structural mismatch. This...

We show that a developed biomedical device involving continuous or pulsed visible laser based treatment that is combined with antibiotic treatment (gentamycin), results in a statistically significant synergistic effect leading to a reduction in the viability of P. aeruginosa PAO1, by 8 log's compared to antibiotic treatment alone.
