Three-dimensional Motion Analysis

Three-dimensional motion analysis is a quantitative method for measuring how an object or organism moves through space, making it valuable for studying biomechanics, behavior, and biological function. The technique typically uses multiple synchronized cameras or motion sensors to record movement from different viewpoints, then reconstructs the subject’s three-dimensional position by triangulating tracked markers or features across time. Researchers can calculate joint angles, trajectories, velocity, acceleration, and coordination patterns to compare normal and altered movement. In biology, these measurements support investigations of locomotion, motor control, development, injury, and disease, while also informing animal behavior studies, rehabilitation research, and the design of assistive technologies.

Dimensional analysis, also known as the factor label method, is a versatile approach for mathematical operations. The main principle behind this approach is: the units of quantities must be subjected to the same mathematical operations as their associated numbers. This method can be applied to computations ranging from simple unit conversions to more complex and multi-step calculations involving several different quantities and their units. Conversion Factors and Dimensional Analysis The unit...

A method is described to measure three-dimensional vestibulo ocular reflexes (3D VOR) in humans using a six degrees of freedom (6DF) motion simulator. The gain and misalignment of the 3D angular VOR provide a direct measure of the quality of vestibular function. Representative data on healthy subjects are...

Visualize a drone, with its propellers spinning rapidly, hovering mid-air. The fascinating movements and operations of this drone can be comprehended by applying the principle of general plane motion. As the drone's propellers rotate, an upward force is generated that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the drone to lift off from the ground. This initial movement of the drone is along a straight path, representing a form of translational motion. In this phase, every point on the drone...
