Tim Complex

The TIM complex, or translocase of the inner mitochondrial membrane, is a protein-import machinery that moves nuclear-encoded proteins into mitochondria, where they support energy production and organelle maintenance. Precursor proteins first cross the outer membrane and then engage TIM channels in the inner membrane, whose transport activity depends on targeting sequences, the membrane potential, and ATP-driven chaperones such as mitochondrial Hsp70. By controlling mitochondrial protein localization, the TIM complex helps preserve respiratory function, metabolism, and cellular homeostasis. Studying its structure and mechanism clarifies how defects in mitochondrial import contribute to disease and informs research on organelle biogenesis and therapeutic intervention.

The low-energy water-accommodated fraction (LEWAF) of crude oil is a challenging system to analyze, because over time, this complex mixture undergoes chemical transformations. This protocol illustrates methods for the preparation of the LEWAF sample and for performing photo-irradiation and chemical analysis by trapped ion mobility spectrometry–FT-ICR MS.

We describe a multiplex method for the detection of microorganisms within a sample using oligonucleotide-coupled fluorescent beads. Amplicon from all organisms within a sample is hybridized to a panel of probe-coupled beads. A Luminex or Bio-Plex instrument is used to query each bead for bead type and hybridization signal.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
