Transgenic Mosquito Production

Transgenic mosquito production is a method for creating mosquitoes that carry introduced genetic material, enabling researchers to study gene function and modify traits linked to disease transmission. The process typically involves microinjecting engineered DNA into early embryos, where transposon-based systems or genome-editing tools such as CRISPR can insert or alter sequences; researchers then select and breed individuals that inherit the desired construct. These mosquitoes support studies of development, immunity, insecticide resistance, and vector competence, the ability to acquire and transmit pathogens. Transgenic lines also provide a foundation for evaluating population-control strategies and genetic approaches to reducing mosquito-borne disease.
