Trophic Pyramid

A trophic pyramid is a graphical model that represents the organization of feeding relationships within an ecosystem, showing how organisms occupy successive trophic levels. Producers form the base by converting light or chemical energy into biomass, while primary, secondary, and higher-level consumers obtain energy by feeding on organisms below them; energy and available biomass generally decrease at each transfer. Trophic pyramids can depict energy flow, biomass, or the number of organisms at each level, revealing patterns of ecological efficiency and population structure. In biology, they help explain food webs, ecosystem productivity, species interactions, and the effects of environmental change.

Trophic Levels

2025

All organisms in an ecosystem occupy a trophic level in the food chain. The lowest level consists of primary producers, which synthesize their food from either solar or chemical energy. Each subsequent level obtains energy from the levels below. Detritivores can occupy any of the levels above primary producers. Food Chains Within an ecosystem, energy and nutrients flow through organisms in a sequential order known as a food chain. Each organism occupies a trophic level or a specific place...

Trophic Efficiency

2025

Trophic level transfer efficiency (TLTE) is a measure of the total energy transfer from one trophic level to the next. Due to extensive energy loss as metabolic heat, an average of only 10% of the original energy obtained is passed on to the next level. This pattern of energy loss severely limits the possible number of trophic levels in a food chain. Trophic Level Transfer Efficiency Following the second law of thermodynamics, large amounts of energy are lost from the ecosystem and from one...

2014

A technique for laboratory estimation of net trophic transfer efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners to piscivorous fish from their prey is presented. To maximize applicability of the laboratory results to the field, the piscivorous fish should be fed prey fish that are typically eaten in the field.

This video describes a method for preparing glass coverslips coated with polyornithine and laminin to enhance the adhesion and growth of neural stem cells. The technique involves sequential incubations and washes, facilitating the formation of a supportive matrix that promotes neuronal cell growth and differentiation, mimicking structures found in the neurons.
