Tumor Cell Intravasation

Tumor cell intravasation is the entry of cancer cells from a primary tumor into nearby blood or lymphatic vessels, a key step in metastatic spread. It occurs when tumor cells remodel and cross the extracellular matrix and basement membrane, interact with endothelial cells, and pass through the vessel wall, often aided by altered cell adhesion, motility, and protease activity. Studying this process helps explain how local tumors gain access to distant organs and why only some circulating cells establish metastases. In biology and cancer research, intravasation assays, imaging, and organoid or animal models support evaluation of invasion mechanisms and anti-metastatic therapies.
