Ventral Laminectomy

Ventral laminectomy is a specialized spinal decompression procedure that removes bone from the ventral, or front-facing, portion of a vertebral arch to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. During surgery, clinicians access the spinal canal from the ventral side and excise obstructing bone, disc material, or other compressive tissue while preserving spinal stability and neural structures. This technique is used to treat selected cases of spinal cord compression, including intervertebral disc disease, stenosis, and space-occupying lesions. By restoring room around neural tissue, ventral laminectomy can reduce neurological impairment and support functional recovery, while also providing direct access for diagnosis or lesion removal.

We show how to prepare oblique slices of the spinal cord in young mice. This preparation allows for the stimulation of the ventral roots.

Co-culturing of Ventral Hippocampal and Nucleus Accumbens

This video demonstrates the process of preparing ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues from mouse brains for co-culture. Neurons extend projections to form synaptic connections between the ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues. This method allows studying neuronal interactions between these two brain regions, offering insights into cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders.

Intraspinal Cell Transplantation for Targeting Cervical Ventral Horn in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Neural precursor transplantation is a promising strategy for protecting and/or replacing lost/dysfunctional cervical phrenic motor neurons in spinal cord injury (SCI) and the motor neuron disorder, amyotrophic laterals sclerosis (ALS). We provide a protocol for cell delivery to cervical spinal cord ventral horn in rodent models of ALS and SCI.

Ectopic expression is one technique to elucidate the microRNAs role in brain development. However, targeting specific areas using in ovo electroporation is challenging. Here, we show an efficient way to selectively electroporate ventral and dorsal midbrain regions.
