Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder in which areas of skin lose melanin, the pigment responsible for much of the skin’s color, because melanocytes are damaged or destroyed. In many cases, the immune system mistakenly targets these pigment-producing cells, causing sharply defined depigmented patches that may expand or appear in different body regions. Studying vitiligo helps biologists understand immune regulation, melanocyte biology, and the cellular basis of pigmentation. This knowledge supports clinical diagnosis and informs research into treatments that restore pigment, limit disease progression, or address the underlying immune response.
