Weaning Pups

Weaning pups is the developmental transition in which young mammals gradually shift from maternal milk to solid food, an important stage in nutrition, growth, and independence. As milk intake decreases, pups develop teeth and digestive capacity, begin consuming increasingly varied foods, and learn feeding behaviors through contact with the mother and littermates. In biology, studying weaning helps researchers understand mammalian development, parental investment, social behavior, and nutritional requirements. The timing and management of this transition also influence health, growth, stress, and survival in laboratory, domestic, and conservation settings.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Millions of mice and rats are bred for use in biomedical research each year. Worldwide, there are several large commercial breeding facilities that supply mice to research laboratories, but many facilities also choose to breed mice and rats in-house to reduce costs and increase research options. When breeding in the animal facility, researchers are able to manipulate the genetics of the...

Long-Term Continuous Electroencephalography Monitoring in a Rodent Pup

2025

The video demonstrates long-term continuous electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring in rodent pups using a wireless transmitter system. The transmitter contains two recording electrodes and one reference electrode extending to the brain's surface. Upon placing the pup in a recording chamber, EEG can be continuously monitored throughout the pup's development into adulthood.

Inspiratory Muscle Training as an Adjunct to the Treatment of Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Practical Guide

Respiratory muscle weakness is highly prevalent in patients weaning from mechanical ventilation. Resistive inspiratory muscle training (IMT) can improve inspiratory strength and potentially weaning outcomes. This protocol provides a structured approach to offer IMT to selected patients based on the best available knowledge, facilitating its wider application in critical care.

Transplantation of Interneuron Precursor Cells into the Brain of a Mouse Pup

Source: Quattrocolo, G., et al. Homochronic Transplantation of Interneuron Precursors into Early Postnatal Mouse Brains. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the transplantation of interneuron precursor cells into the neonatal mouse brain using either a homotopic or heterotopic approach. The procedure involves securing an anesthetized recipient pup, identifying the target brain region, and injecting a suspension of precursor cells derived from a donor pup at the same developmental stage.

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.
