Mmp2

MMP2, also called matrix metalloproteinase-2 or gelatinase A, is a zinc-dependent enzyme that remodels the extracellular matrix by breaking down proteins such as type IV collagen. Cells secrete MMP2 as an inactive proenzyme, which is activated outside the cell through proteolytic processing and then cleaves matrix components that help maintain tissue structure. In cancer research, MMP2 is studied for its role in basement-membrane degradation, tumor-cell invasion, metastasis, and blood-vessel formation. Measuring or inhibiting MMP2 activity can therefore help clarify mechanisms of tumor progression and support evaluation of potential diagnostic markers or therapeutic strategies.
