Phenyl Thiourea

Phenyl thiourea (PTU) is a small thiourea-based chemical compound best known for inhibiting melanin production, making it useful in experimental biology and cancer research. PTU suppresses melanogenesis by inhibiting tyrosinase, a copper-dependent enzyme that catalyzes key steps in melanin synthesis. In zebrafish models, reducing pigmentation can improve optical access to fluorescently labeled tissues, tumor cells, blood vessels, and metastatic lesions during live imaging. This application supports studies of tumor growth, cell migration, angiogenesis, and cancer dissemination while reducing visual interference from pigmentation. PTU therefore serves primarily as an imaging aid and experimental reagent rather than a direct anticancer treatment.

Please adjust quantities as needed. Before getting started, put on a lab coat, safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. You'll be working with hexane, ethanol, and ethyl acetate, which all permeate thin nitrile gloves within minutes, so change your gloves promptly if you get any solvent on them.
