Ultrasound Indicators

Ultrasound indicators are imaging features that help characterize tissue structure, composition, and behavior using high-frequency sound waves, making them valuable for evaluating suspected disease. During an examination, transmitted waves reflect differently at tissue interfaces; computers convert these echoes into images, while Doppler measurements assess blood flow and elastography estimates tissue stiffness. In cancer research, indicators such as lesion shape, margins, internal echo patterns, vascularity, and elasticity can support tumor detection, classification, treatment monitoring, and biopsy guidance. Because these findings may overlap with benign conditions, researchers interpret them alongside pathology, clinical information, and other imaging methods to improve diagnostic accuracy and understand tumor biology.

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...

Pneumothorax is a common emergency and critical disease in newborn infants that needs rapid, clear diagnosis and timely treatment. Diagnosis and treatment based on chest X-rays are associated with delayed management and radiation damage. Lung ultrasound (US) provides useful guidance for rapid, accurate diagnosis and the precise thoracentesis of pneumothorax.

Point-of-Care Kidney and Genitourinary Ultrasound in Adults: Image Acquisition

2024

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the renal and genitourinary (renal-GU) system can help to screen for certain causes of kidney dysfunction. However, despite its clinical utility, renal-GU POCUS remains underutilized due to a lack of training among clinicians. To address this gap, this article describes renal-GU image acquisition and interpretation.

Calcium is a ubiquitous messenger in the nervous system, essential for triggering neurotransmitter release and changes in synaptic strength. Here we demonstrate a technique for loading Ca2+-indicators into Drosophila nerve terminals. We also demonstrate fabrication of the required apparatus and emphasize points critical for the technique's success.
