Ammonia Reduction

Ammonia reduction refers to chemical and engineered strategies that lower ammonia concentrations in air, water, soil, or industrial waste streams, helping control toxicity, odor, and environmental pollution. Depending on the system, reduction occurs through acid-base absorption, adsorption onto reactive materials, biological nitrification, or catalytic oxidation, which converts ammonia into nitrogen gas or other nitrogen-containing products. These approaches support wastewater treatment, fertilizer and livestock management, emissions control, and pollution monitoring. Understanding ammonia’s volatility, solubility, and nitrogen chemistry helps researchers select effective treatment conditions and evaluate how reduction methods influence nutrient cycling and environmental quality.

Reduction of Alkynes to trans-Alkenes: Sodium in Liquid Ammonia

2023

Alkynes can be reduced to trans-alkenes using sodium or lithium in liquid ammonia. The reaction, known as dissolving metal reduction, proceeds with an anti addition of hydrogen across the carbon–carbon triple bond to form the trans product. Since ammonia exists as a gas (bp = −33°C) at room temperature, the reaction is carried out at low temperatures using a mixture of dry ice (sublimes at −78°C) and acetone. When dissolved in liquid ammonia, an alkali metal, such as sodium, dissociates into a...

Ammonia is an important physiologic metabolite relevant to various disease and wellness states. It is also a difficult molecule to measure in breath, which demands particular precautions be taken to obtain accurate results. Not all factors influencing ammonia are known, but progress can be difficult without accounting for these factors.

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...
