Cyclic Anhydride Half-esters

Cyclic anhydride half-esters are monoester carboxylic acids formed when an alcohol opens a cyclic anhydride ring, producing a molecule that retains both ester and carboxylic acid functionality. In this ring-opening alcoholysis, the alcohol oxygen attacks an electrophilic carbonyl, the tetrahedral intermediate collapses, and cleavage of the anhydride bond generates the half-ester, with regioselectivity and reaction conditions influencing the product. These bifunctional compounds serve as useful intermediates in organic synthesis, polymer functionalization, surfactant preparation, and materials design, where the ester supports further transformations while the carboxylic acid enables salt formation, coupling, or additional chemical modification.

Nomenclature of Carboxylic Acid Derivatives: Acid Halides, Esters, and Acid Anhydrides

Naming Acid Halides The IUPAC and common names of acid halides are derived from the corresponding carboxylic acids, by changing “ic acid” to “yl halide.” For example, as shown below, the IUPAC name ethanoyl chloride is derived from ethanoic acid, and the common name, acetyl chloride, is obtained from acetic acid. IUPAC: Ethanoic acid Ethanoyl chloride Common: Acetic acid Acetyl chloride Cyclic acid halides are named by replacing the suffix...

Triglycerides Triglycerides are triester molecules composed of a glycerol backbone that is bound to 3 fatty acids. These form the basis of many biological lipids that are found in vegetable oils and fats. Lipids that are isolated from plant material are the basis of vegetable oils, whereas lipids extracted from animals are used as lard or general sources of fats. A fatty acid molecule has a long carbon chain — between 12 and 20 carbons — with a weak organic acid at one end. Some fatty acids...

Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Kayla Green — Texas Christian University A Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiment involves the scan of a range of potential voltages while measuring current. In the CV experiment, the potential of an immersed, stationary electrode is scanned from a predetermined starting potential to a final value (called the switching potential) and then the reverse scan is obtained. This gives a 'cyclic' sweep of potentials and the current vs. potential curve derived from the data is...

Reactions of Acid Anhydrides

The reactions of acid anhydrides are analogous to the reactions of acid chlorides and proceed via a nucleophilic acyl substitution. They only differ in the identity of the leaving group. During an acid chloride reaction, the leaving group is a chloride ion, and the by-product is hydrochloric acid. However, in an acid anhydride reaction, the leaving group is a carboxylate ion, and the by-product is a carboxylic acid. The reaction of acid anhydrides involves the nucleophilic attack at one...

Preparation of Acid Anhydrides

One of the methods for preparing symmetrical or unsymmetrical acid anhydrides involves the treatment of acid chlorides with the sodium salt of carboxylic acids. The reaction proceeds via a nucleophilic acyl substitution. The carboxylate ion acts as a nucleophile that attacks the carbonyl carbon of the acid chloride to form a tetrahedral intermediate. Subsequently, the re-formation of the carbonyl group with the loss of the chloride ion as a leaving group leads to the formation of an acid...
