Epoxy Prefix Usage

Epoxy prefix usage describes how the prefix “epoxy-” identifies an oxygen atom bridging two neighboring carbon atoms, usually within a strained three-membered cyclic ether called an epoxide or oxirane ring. In chemical nomenclature, the prefix locates this oxygen bridge relative to the carbon skeleton, as in 1,2-epoxypropane, while the ring’s strain helps explain its characteristic reactivity. Nucleophiles can attack an epoxide carbon and open the ring, producing functionalized alcohols. This terminology supports the identification and discussion of epoxide intermediates, pharmaceuticals, and epoxy resins, whose cross-linking reactions produce durable coatings, adhesives, and composite materials.

The prediction of the coreceptor usage of HIV-1 is required for the administration of a new class of antiretroviral drugs, i.e. coreceptor antagonists. It can be performed by sequence analysis of the env gene and subsequent interpretation through an internet based interpretation system (geno2pheno[coreceptor]).
