Geiger-muller Counter

A Geiger-Müller counter is an instrument that detects and counts ionizing radiation, making otherwise invisible radioactive emissions measurable in laboratory and field settings. Inside its gas-filled tube, incoming alpha, beta, or gamma radiation produces ion pairs; a high electric field accelerates the electrons, triggering a Townsend avalanche and a brief electrical pulse that the instrument records as a count. In chemistry, Geiger-Müller counters support radiation-safety surveys, contamination checks, radioactive-tracer work, and demonstrations of nuclear decay, although they generally provide count rates rather than precise measurements of particle energy or radionuclide identity. Their simple, sensitive operation makes them useful for monitoring exposure and verifying controlled handling of radioactive materials.

Establishing a Müller Glial Cell Culture Obtained from Mouse Retinas

2025

This video demonstrates the culturing of Müller glial (MG) cells isolated from mouse retinas. Retinas are dissociated into a single-cell suspension using digestive enzymes. Cells are then grown in a medium with a growth factor that promotes MG cell proliferation and neuronal cell mortality. Dead neuronal cells are removed while passaging, and MG cells are grown for further analysis.

2012

The Moxi Z miniature automated cell counter is a novel instrument that combines the Coulter Principle with patented thin-film sensor technology and a proprietary software algorithm to perform sizing and counting of a broad size range of particles as well as to determine the overall health of monodisperse mammalian cell cultures. This protocol describes the use of this instrument for counting and assessing the health of cell cultures.
