Iron(ii) Solution

Iron(II) solution is an aqueous mixture containing hydrated Fe2+ ions, an important form of iron in inorganic and analytical chemistry. In water, Fe2+ coordinates with solvent molecules and other ligands, while its oxidation state can change to Fe3+ when exposed to oxygen or other oxidizing agents; acidic conditions often help limit this oxidation. Iron(II) solutions support redox chemistry, complex formation, and precipitation reactions, making them useful for qualitative ion tests, redox titrations, and the preparation of iron-containing compounds. Studying these solutions also illustrates coordination chemistry, oxidation-reduction processes, and the environmental behavior of dissolved iron.

General Properties of Solutions

2020

Many common substances around us exist as a solution, such as ocean water, air, and gasoline. All solutions are mixtures of substances that are composed of varying amounts of two or more types of atoms or molecules. A mixture with a non-uniform composition is a heterogeneous mixture, whereas a mixture with a uniform composition is a homogeneous mixture. The components that make the homogeneous mixture are evenly spread out and thoroughly mixed. A solution is a homogeneous mixture that is...
