Liquid Phase Exfoliation

Liquid phase exfoliation is a method for producing two-dimensional nanosheets by separating layered crystals into individual or few-layer sheets within a liquid. In chemistry, a solvent is selected to interact favorably with crystal surfaces, while sonication, stirring, or high-shear mixing supplies energy that overcomes interlayer forces; centrifugation can then remove unexfoliated material and sort the dispersion. The resulting colloids provide scalable routes to graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, and other layered materials, with tunable concentration, sheet thickness, and surface chemistry for inks, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, and composite materials.

2016

A two dimensional model material of discotic zirconium phosphate was developed. The inorganic crystal with lamellar structure was synthesized by hydrothermal, reflux, and microwave-assisted methods. On exfoliation with organic molecules, layered crystals can be converted to monolayers, and nematic liquid crystal phase was formed at sufficient concentration of monolayers.

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.
