Monomer Incorporation

Monomer incorporation is the process by which individual monomer molecules become chemically integrated into a growing polymer chain, determining the polymer’s composition and properties. During polymerization, reactive functional groups or unsaturated bonds form covalent bonds between monomers, while reaction conditions and monomer structure influence incorporation rate, sequence, and molecular architecture. In chemistry, analyzing monomer incorporation helps researchers control copolymer composition, branching, and chain structure for applications such as materials design, coatings, adhesives, and biomedical polymers. Understanding this process also supports the development of polymers with tailored mechanical, thermal, and chemical performance.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

Here, we describe protocols for the preparation of trans-cyclobutane fused cyclooctenes (tCBCO), their polymerization to prepare depolymerizable olefinic polymers, and the depolymerization of these polymers under mild conditions. Additionally, protocols for the preparation of depolymerizable networks and compression molding of rigid linear plastics based on this system are described.
