Metal-insoluble-salt Electrodes

Metal-insoluble-salt electrodes are electrochemical electrodes made from a metal coated with, or in contact with, a sparingly soluble salt of that metal. They function through an equilibrium between the metal, its insoluble salt, and ions in solution, so the electrode potential depends primarily on the activity of the relevant anion and the solution temperature. Common examples include silver/silver chloride and calomel electrodes, which provide stable, reproducible reference potentials for measuring unknown electrode potentials. In analytical and physical chemistry, these electrodes support potentiometry, pH and ion-selective measurements, redox studies, and electrochemical cell characterization.
