Radical Species Detection

Radical species detection is the identification and characterization of chemical species containing unpaired electrons, which often control rapid and selective reactions. Electron paramagnetic resonance detects these species by measuring transitions between electron spin states in an applied magnetic field, while spin-trapping agents can convert short-lived radicals into more stable adducts for analysis. Complementary optical, mass spectrometric, and electrochemical approaches can provide information about radical identity, concentration, and reaction pathways. In chemistry, these methods clarify mechanisms in catalysis, combustion, atmospheric reactions, materials processing, and oxidative chemistry, helping researchers control radical formation and evaluate its effects.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...
