Square Planar Structure

Square planar structure is a molecular geometry in which a central atom bonds to four surrounding atoms or ligands arranged in one plane at approximately 90° angles, making it important for understanding coordination compounds. It commonly occurs in transition-metal complexes, especially those with d8 electron configurations, where ligand-field splitting and the metal’s electronic structure favor a planar arrangement over tetrahedral geometry. Square planar complexes can display cis and trans isomerism, influencing their physical and chemical properties. This structure is central to interpreting bonding, reactivity, and substitution reactions in inorganic chemistry, including the behavior of platinum-based coordination compounds.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes

Tetrahedral Complexes Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...

Preparation of protein-functionalized planar glass-supported lipid bilayers, determination of protein mobility within and measurement of protein densities is shown here. A roadmap to building a noise-reduced Total Internal Reflection microscope is outlined, which allows visualizing single bilayer-resident fluorochromes with high spatiotemporal resolution.

Supported Planar Bilayers for the Formation of Study of Immunological Synapses and Kinapse

Supported planar bilayers are powerful tools that can be used to model the molecular interactions in an immunological synapse. Here, we show methods for anchoring cell adhesion proteins known to modulate synapse formation to the upper leaflet of the lipid bilyer and visualize synapse formation using TIRF microscopy.

Root Mean Square

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...
