Tin Reference Electrode

A tin reference electrode is an electrochemical device that provides a stable, reproducible potential for measuring the potentials of other electrodes in a chemical cell. It typically consists of metallic tin in contact with a solution containing tin ions, with its potential established by the reversible Sn2+ + 2e− ⇌ Sn equilibrium and described by the Nernst equation. By serving as a fixed reference, it allows researchers to interpret working-electrode behavior during potentiometry, voltammetry, corrosion studies, and electrodeposition. Controlling ion concentration, temperature, and solution composition is essential because these conditions influence the electrode potential and measurement accuracy.

Non-fouling PEG silane monolayer was desorbed from individually addressable ITO electrodes on glass by application of a reductive potential. Electrochemical stripping of PEG-silane layer from ITO microelectrodes allowed for cell adhesion to take place in a spatially defined fashion, with cellular patterns corresponding closely to electrode patterns.

This protocol describes the fabrication of a one-piece indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-based ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET), which can be constructed as a solution-gated FET sensor (e.g., pH sensor) using a short and simple process (approximately half a day). This one-piece ITO-ISFET can also be applied to biosensing.

A procedure for performing reductive electropolymerization of vinyl-containing compounds onto glassy carbon and fluorine doped tin-oxide coated electrodes is presented. Recommendations on electrochemical cell configurations and troubleshooting procedures are included. Although not explicitly described here, oxidative electropolymerization of pyrrole-containing compounds follows similar procedures to vinyl-based reductive electropolymerization.
