Chest Drainage

Chest drainage is a clinical procedure that removes air, blood, pus, or other fluid from the pleural space to restore normal pressure and support lung expansion. It typically uses a chest tube placed through the thoracic wall and connected to a water-seal drainage system, with suction applied when clinically indicated; the one-way seal allows contents to leave the chest while limiting their return. Chest drainage is used to manage pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, and postoperative thoracic conditions. Proper tube placement, system monitoring, and assessment of respiratory status help guide treatment and reduce complications.

Overview of Flail Chest Flail chest is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the fracture of three or more adjacent ribs in multiple places. It is most commonly caused by direct impacts and trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or injuries from a steering wheel impact. It can also occur due to falls in elderly individuals with osteoporosis, or assaults involving sharp objects. Pathophysiology The pathophysiology of flail chest is complex, involving fractures of...

Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs. Assessment: 1. Clinical Evaluation: History: • Nurses obtain a detailed history of the traumatic event,...

Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated. Purpose CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Acid Mine Drainage

Mining activities that disturb sulfide-rich rocks, particularly those containing pyrite (FeS₂), initiate a cascade of geochemical and microbiological processes with serious environmental implications. When exposed to air and water, pyrite undergoes oxidation, releasing sulfate, ultimately forming sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals into surrounding water systems. This phenomenon, known as acid mine drainage (AMD), results in low pH waters laden with toxic elements that threaten aquatic...

We present a method to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and to create a system which lacks CSF within the embryonic zebrafish brain ventricular system. This allows for further examination of CSF composition and its requirement during embryonic brain development.
