Diaphragmatic Excursion

Diaphragmatic excursion is the movement of the diaphragm during breathing and serves as an indicator of respiratory muscle function. During inspiration, diaphragmatic contraction lowers the muscle and increases thoracic volume, while relaxation during expiration allows it to rise; clinicians commonly assess this displacement with ultrasound in the subcostal view. Measuring excursion can help evaluate diaphragmatic weakness, respiratory failure, neuromuscular disease, and readiness for ventilator weaning. Because the assessment is noninvasive and can be repeated at the bedside, it supports clinical decision-making and monitoring of changes in respiratory performance.

2025

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an essential technique for screening for diaphragmatic dysfunction due to its portability, non-invasiveness, and real-time imaging capabilities. Although current diaphragmatic POCUS protocols exist, they suffer from poor interoperator reliability and lack consensus guidelines. Here we describe a technique that is reproducible and simple to perform.

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

Using Point of Care Ultrasound to Augment Acquisition of Physical Exam Skills: Organs

2023

Source: Joseph H. Donroe, Rachel Liu; Yale School of Medicine, USA Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is used by clinicians for diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and/or procedural guidance at the time of patient care. Many medical schools are now teaching POCUS as a part of their basic clinical skills training, in addition to history, physical exams, and clinical reasoning. Besides being an independent skill, POCUS is also an incredibly useful tool for augmenting the teaching and learning of the...

Coordinate Mapping of Hyolaryngeal Mechanics in Swallowing

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.
