Diarrhea

Diarrhea is the passage of abnormally loose or watery stools, often with increased frequency, and is an important clinical symptom rather than a single disease. It develops when intestinal water and electrolyte balance is disrupted by reduced absorption, increased secretion, unabsorbed osmotic substances, inflammation, or accelerated intestinal transit. Clinical evaluation distinguishes acute from persistent or chronic diarrhea by considering duration, stool characteristics, diet, medications, infection risk, and signs of dehydration or systemic illness. These assessments guide oral rehydration, targeted treatment of underlying causes, diagnostic testing when indicated, and prevention of complications, making diarrhea a key focus in gastroenterology, infectious disease, and public health.

Source: Nag, D., et.al. Quantifying Vibrio cholerae Colonization and Diarrhea in the Adult Zebrafish Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the inoculation of adult zebrafish with a pathogenic Vibrio cholerae strain to study intestinal colonization and disease outcomes. It shows how bacterial toxins disrupt intestinal integrity, leading to fluid leakage, mucus secretion, and watery diarrhea before the fish are prepared for further analysis.

Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

2024

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions. Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Zebrafish are a natural Vibrio cholerae host and can be used to recapitulate and study the entire infectious cycle from colonization to transmission. Here, we demonstrate how to assess V. cholerae colonization levels and quantify diarrhea in zebrafish.
