In Vitro Experiments

In vitro experiments are studies performed outside a living organism using isolated cells, tissues, biological fluids, or microorganisms under controlled laboratory conditions. Researchers manipulate defined variables, such as drug concentration, exposure time, or cellular environment, and measure responses with biochemical, molecular, or imaging-based assays. In clinical research, these experiments help clarify disease mechanisms, evaluate therapeutic candidates, assess toxicity, and develop diagnostic tests before studies proceed to humans. By enabling precise control and efficient comparison of conditions, in vitro models provide important evidence for translational research, while also revealing biological limitations that must be considered when interpreting how results may apply to patients.

Clinical linear accelerators can be used to determine biologic effects of a wide range of dose rates on cancer cells. We discuss how to set up a linear accelerator for cell-based assays and assays for cancer stem-like cells grown as tumorspheres in suspension and cell lines grown as adherent cultures.

Here, we present the preparation of an er-xian decoction (EXD) in four steps—soaking, decoction, filtration, and concentration—and demonstrate the administration of a prepared EXD-containing serum to rats. These methods are applicable to the in vivo and in vitro study of herbal decoctions such as traditional Chinese medicines.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A factorial design is a common type of experiment where there are two or more independent variables. This video demonstrates a 2 x 2 factorial design used to explore how self-awareness and self-esteem may influence the ability to decipher nonverbal signals. This video leads students through the basics of a factorial design including, the nature of a factorial design and what distinguishes it from...
