Kidney Biopsy

Kidney biopsy is a diagnostic procedure that removes a small sample of renal tissue to identify the cause and severity of kidney disease. Usually performed with image guidance, a specialized needle collects tissue through the skin, which is then examined using light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy to evaluate glomeruli, tubules, interstitium, and blood vessels. In clinical practice, biopsy findings help distinguish conditions such as glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndromes, and transplant rejection from one another. The results guide treatment selection, estimate prognosis, and provide objective evidence for monitoring disease progression or response to therapy.

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...

Normothermic Ex Vivo Kidney Perfusion for the Preservation of Kidney Grafts prior to Transplantation

The severe organ shortage has resulted in increased use of marginal kidney grafts for transplantation. This has triggered interest in alternative storage methods, since marginal grafts especially tolerate cold storage poorly. The technique of normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion (NEVKP) represents a novel preservation method for kidney grafts prior to transplantation.
