Oxygen Therapy Assessment

Oxygen Therapy Assessment is the systematic evaluation of a patient’s oxygenation status and response to supplemental oxygen, helping clinicians determine whether therapy is needed and whether it is effective and safe. Assessment combines clinical observations with measurements such as pulse oximetry, which estimates peripheral oxygen saturation through light absorption, and arterial blood gas analysis, which directly evaluates oxygen and carbon dioxide levels alongside blood pH. In clinical practice, these findings guide oxygen delivery and titration, support recognition of hypoxemia or inadequate response, and help prevent unnecessary exposure to excessive oxygen. Accurate assessment is essential for individualized respiratory care and ongoing patient monitoring.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a Neuroprotective Strategy for Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

Take a mouse subjected to laser-induced damage to the optic nerve head in the eye.The damage causes endothelial cell injury and blood clot formation in the blood vessels supplying the nerve, reducing blood flow and causing ischemia.Ischemia deprives the retinal ganglion cell axons in the optic nerve head of oxygen. In the RGC cell bodies, this disruption impairs mitochondrial function and increases reactive oxygen species production. The resulting oxidative stress activates apoptotic signaling...

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure

2024

Oxygen therapy has emerged as a significant tool in enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While this therapy has principally been studied on patients with significant hypoxemia, this therapeutic approach helps prevent potential organ damage and can be administered in the comfort of one's home. Oxygen therapy is vital in increasing and maintaining blood oxygen levels in PAH patients. As a result, it aids in reducing fatigue, improving...
