Therapeutic Window

Therapeutic window is the range of drug exposure between the minimum concentration that produces a desired clinical effect and the concentration at which toxicity becomes likely, making it a key concept in safe medication use. Pharmacokinetic factors such as absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion determine how a dose changes drug concentrations over time, while pharmacodynamic responses link those concentrations to benefit and harm. Clinicians use this window to select doses, adjust treatment for patient-specific factors, and interpret therapeutic drug monitoring. Drugs with narrow therapeutic windows require especially careful monitoring because small concentration changes can reduce efficacy or cause serious adverse effects.

Conditioned fear can be diminished through an inhibitory process called extinction, but can resurface under conditions such as the passage of time or exposure to stress. Our protocol presents a novel way of preventing fear recovery by introducing extinction during the reconsolidation window (the re-storage phase of a reactivated memory).

Therapeutic Index

2025

The therapeutic index of a drug is a key parameter in pharmacology that quantifies the relative safety of a drug by calculating the ratio between the dose that causes toxicity in half the population (50%) to the dose that proves to be effective for half the population (50%). It provides a spectrum of doses for a particular drug ranging from effective to potentially toxic. To illustrate, consider an anticoagulant agent like warfarin. It possesses a narrow window within its therapeutic index to...
