Valve Anatomy

Valve anatomy is the study of the structure and spatial relationships of cardiac valves, which regulate one-way blood flow through the heart and are essential for normal circulation. Each valve opens when pressure behind it exceeds pressure ahead, then closes as the gradient reverses; the atrioventricular valves are supported by chordae tendineae and papillary muscles, while semilunar valves use pocket-shaped cusps to prevent backflow. Understanding the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, and aortic valves helps clinicians interpret auscultation and echocardiography, identify stenosis or regurgitation, and plan medical, surgical, or catheter-based treatment.

Anatomy of the Heart

2019

The human heart is made up of three layers of tissue that are surrounded by the pericardium, a membrane that protects and confines the heart. The outermost layer, closest to the pericardium, is the epicardium. The pericardial cavity separates the pericardium from the epicardium. Beneath the epicardium is the myocardium, the middle layer, and the endocardium, the innermost layer. There are four chambers of the heart: the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle.

Anatomy of the Eyeball

The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle layer, the vascular tunic,...

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth. The Crown, Neck, and Root The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.

Anatomy of the Gastrointestinal System

The human digestive system is an intricate and essential network for nutrient absorption and waste elimination. It encompasses the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and several accessory organs. Here's a detailed walkthrough of this complex system: Oral Cavity: The starting point of the digestive process. It comprises lips, cheeks, teeth, and salivary glands within mucous membranes. It extends to the soft palate, the floor of the mouth, and the tongue. Pharynx: It is a tubular...

2017

This protocol describes the isolation, culture, and calcification of rat-derived valve interstitial cells, a highly physiological in vitro model of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Exploitation of this rat model facilitates CAVD research in exploring the cell and molecular mechanisms that underlie this complex pathological process.
