Wound Care Protocols

Wound care protocols are standardized clinical procedures for assessing, treating, and monitoring tissue injuries to support healing and reduce complications. They typically begin with evaluating wound type, depth, tissue condition, drainage, and signs of infection, followed by cleansing, appropriate debridement, bleeding control, and selection of a dressing that maintains a balanced moist environment. Protocols may also address pain management, pressure relief, nutrition, and scheduled reassessment. In clinical practice, consistent wound care improves documentation, guides treatment decisions, limits infection risk, and helps clinicians measure healing across acute injuries, surgical wounds, burns, and chronic ulcers.

The rat, due to its size, availability, and rather docile behavior, has been utilized as a research model for many years. The goal of this protocol is to utilize the rat as an ischemic skin wound healing model to provide valuable insight into the pathophysiology of chronic wounds.

Protocol to Create Chronic Wounds in Diabetic Mice

There is an update associated with this article. Please click here to see the update. Chronic wounds are developed from acute wounds on a diabetic mouse model by inducing high levels of oxidative stress after a full-thickness cutaneous wound. The wound is treated with inhibitors for catalase and glutathione peroxidase, resulting in impaired healing and biofilm development by bacteria present in the skin microbiome.

This article provides a detailed and visual description of a methodology for collecting and measuring biochemical inflammatory and nociceptive mediators at the surgical wound site following cesarean delivery. This human bioassay has been used to determine correlations between wound and serum cytokine concentrations and drug-mediated changes in wound cytokines, chemokines and neuropetides.

Structured protocols are necessary to provide answers on research questions in critically ill patients. The Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS) provides an infrastructure for repeated measurements in critically ill patients including clinical examination, biochemical analysis and ultrasonography. SICS projects have specific focus but the structure is flexible to other investigations.
