Dmso Cryoprotectant

DMSO cryoprotectant refers to dimethyl sulfoxide used to protect living cells and tissues from freezing damage during cryopreservation. Because DMSO permeates cell membranes, it reduces ice formation and limits osmotic stress as water shifts during cooling and thawing, although its protective effect depends on concentration, temperature, and exposure time. In developmental biology, DMSO-based protocols help preserve embryos, gametes, stem cells, and other valuable biological materials for later culture and analysis. Reliable cryopreservation supports studies of development, enables repeated experiments, and helps maintain genetic resources while minimizing loss of cell viability.

Generating differentiated cell types from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) holds great therapeutic promise but remains challenging. PSCs often exhibit an inherent inability to differentiate even when stimulated with a proper set of signals. Described here is a simple tool to enhance multilineage differentiation across a variety of PSC lines.

Rabbit Embryo Vitrification Using Cryogenic Straw: An Ultra-Rapid Cooling Technique to Preserve Rabbit Embryos for Long-term Storage

2025

In this video, we describe the procedure for vitrification of harvested rabbit embryos at desired development stage using ethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide as cryoprotectants and cryogenic straw as the carrier system. The vitrified embryos have high survival rate and can be stored for an extended period until use.
