Echocardiography Infarction Size

Echocardiography-based infarction size assessment estimates the extent of myocardial tissue damaged by ischemia and infarction using noninvasive ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound waves produce real-time views of cardiac structure and motion, allowing researchers to evaluate regional wall-motion abnormalities, ventricular dimensions, contractile function, and, when available, contrast-related perfusion changes that reflect injured myocardium. In developmental biology, this approach helps characterize how developing or engineered cardiac tissues respond to ischemic injury and recover over time. Repeated measurements can link infarct burden with functional outcomes, supporting studies of cardiac maturation, tissue repair, regenerative therapies, and mechanisms that influence post-injury remodeling.

2025

This article details an optimized protocol for echocardiography-guided intramyocardial injections in rat models of myocardial infarction using a 29 G x 88 mm needle. This technique ensures robust, precise, and reproducible delivery of therapeutic agents directly into the peri-infarct zone.

The post-mortem assessment of myocardial infarction (MI) in rodents is based on quantification of the infarct on stained heart sections. We describe an accurate method to quantify the infarct size using systematic sampling of harvested rat hearts from base to apex and image analyses of trichrome-stained histological sections.

Transthoracic echocardiography offers a noninvasive method for the evaluation of cardiac function in mice. A combination of ultrasound and Doppler imaging modalities can be used to obtain dimensional measurements of the heart and intracardiac blood flow, which together provide an assessment of cardiac systolic and diastolic performance.
