Electrical Coil Implantation

Electrical coil implantation is a specialized method for placing a small conductive coil in living tissue to deliver localized electrical or electromagnetic stimulation, with applications in developmental biology. When current passes through the coil, it generates a magnetic field; depending on the setup, this field or an induced current can alter local bioelectrical conditions and affect nearby cells. Researchers use the technique to investigate how electrical cues interact with developmental signaling, tissue organization, morphogenesis, and cell behavior. By providing spatially targeted stimulation, electrical coil implantation can help distinguish the contributions of bioelectric signals from chemical and mechanical regulators during embryonic development.

The present protocol describes the measurement of the electrically evoked stapedius reflex (eSR) via cochlear implant (CI). Two applications are discussed: intraoperative detection of eSR for verification of the coupling between the cochlear implant and the auditory nerve and postoperative measurement of eSR thresholds (eSRT) for CI fitting.
