Lung Organoids

Lung organoids are three-dimensional, stem cell-derived tissue models that reproduce key features of lung structure and development in vitro, providing a tractable system for studying how respiratory tissues form. They arise when stem or progenitor cells receive defined biochemical signals and self-organize within a supportive extracellular matrix, generating cell populations and spatial relationships that resemble developing airway or alveolar tissue. In developmental biology, lung organoids help researchers examine lineage specification, branching morphogenesis, and epithelial maturation under controlled conditions. They also support studies of congenital and infectious lung disease, drug responses, and regenerative strategies, while reducing reliance on animal models and enabling patient-specific research.
