Translational Neuroscience

Translational neuroscience connects discoveries about the nervous system with tools, treatments, and diagnostic approaches that address human health, helping convert basic research into clinical benefit. It advances this process by testing cellular and molecular findings across experimental models, patient-derived cells, neuroimaging, biomarkers, and clinical studies, while refining hypotheses through evidence from each stage. In developmental biology, translational neuroscience clarifies how genes, signaling pathways, and environmental factors shape neural circuits and contribute to conditions such as neurodevelopmental disorders. This integration supports earlier diagnosis, more relevant disease models, and therapies designed to target developmental mechanisms before lasting neural dysfunction emerges.

2017

Anesthesia-induced developmental neurotoxicity (AIDN) research has focused on rodents, which are not broadly applicable to humans. Non-human primate models are more relevant, but are cost-prohibitive and difficult to use for experimentation. The piglet, in contrast, is a clinically relevant, practical animal model ideal for the study of anesthetic neurotoxicity.

The cognitive neuroscience approach to development focuses on how the central nervous system supports emerging cognitive abilities. Neuroimaging and behavioral studies link specific neural systems to memory and cognitive processing in infancy.Distinct Memory Systems in the Developing BrainInfant long-term memory includes two distinct systems: implicit and explicit memory. Implicit, or nondeclarative, memory involves unconscious recall of skills and routines. It develops early and appears in...
