Carbon Reduction

Carbon reduction is the process of lowering carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse-gas releases associated with human activities, helping limit climate change. In engineering, it relies on measuring emissions across a system or product life cycle, then applying strategies such as energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy integration, material substitution, and carbon capture to reduce or remove carbon at key sources. These approaches support the design of lower-impact buildings, vehicles, manufacturing systems, and infrastructure. Carbon reduction also informs life-cycle assessment, technology selection, regulatory planning, and long-term development of resilient, resource-efficient systems.

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

2015

A procedure for performing reductive electropolymerization of vinyl-containing compounds onto glassy carbon and fluorine doped tin-oxide coated electrodes is presented. Recommendations on electrochemical cell configurations and troubleshooting procedures are included. Although not explicitly described here, oxidative electropolymerization of pyrrole-containing compounds follows similar procedures to vinyl-based reductive electropolymerization.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

A Reduction of Uncertainty

2026

Lease contracts are essential in reducing financial uncertainties that could impact a firm’s stability. One significant uncertainty is the residual value of an asset at the end of its lease term or useful life. The residual value represents the estimated worth of an asset upon disposal, which can fluctuate due to market conditions and technological changes.By assuming residual value risk, lessors leverage their asset valuation and resale expertise to manage depreciation and market fluctuations.
