Computed Tomography

Computed tomography is an imaging method that reconstructs cross-sectional views of an object from measurements collected at multiple angles, revealing internal structure without cutting it open. In a CT system, an X-ray source and detectors rotate around the object, recording how different materials attenuate the beam; reconstruction algorithms then convert these projection data into slices or three-dimensional volume images. In engineering, computed tomography supports nondestructive testing, dimensional inspection, and failure analysis of components, assemblies, and advanced materials. It can reveal voids, cracks, inclusions, porosity, and manufacturing defects, helping researchers evaluate integrity, improve processes, and guide design decisions.

Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body. The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Source: Kim, D., et. al. Combined Near-infrared Fluorescent Imaging and Micro-computed Tomography for Directly Visualizing Cerebral Thromboemboli. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates visualization of cerebral thrombus in mice using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging. A cerebral thrombus mouse model is injected with fibrin-targeted gold nanoparticles acting as a contrasting agent. The mouse is placed on the bed of a micro-CT machine, and images are acquired from multiple angles.

Diffuse fluorescence tomography offers a relatively low-cost and potentially high-throughout approach to preclinical in vivo tumor imaging. The methodology of optical data collection, calibration, and image reconstruction is presented for a computed tomography-guided non-contact time-domain system using fluorescent targeting of the tumor biomarker epidermal growth factor receptor in a mouse glioma model.

Here we show how to process tree cores with an X-ray computed tomography toolchain. Except for chemical extraction for some purposes, no further physical lab treatment is needed. The toolchain can be used for biomass estimations, for obtaining MXD/tree-ring width data as well as for obtaining quantitative wood anatomy data.

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography for Assessing Brain Function Disruption

2025

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, impairs blood flow to the impacted regions and disrupts the activity of dopaminergic neurons. To investigate TBI-associated disruptions, begin by intravenously injecting a lipophilic radioactive tracer into a patient. The tracer travels through the cerebral vessels and diffuses into cells of the cortical and subcortical brain tissue.Perform single photon emission computed tomography, or SPECT, to detect the tracer-emitted radiation. The resulting signal intensity...
