Cough Audio Analysis

Cough audio analysis is an engineering method that examines recorded cough sounds to characterize respiratory events and support noninvasive assessment. The process typically converts an audio recording into a time-frequency representation, extracts acoustic features such as duration, intensity, spectral content, and energy distribution, and applies signal-processing or machine-learning models to distinguish cough patterns. In clinical and biomedical research, these systems can assist with symptom monitoring, screening research, and evaluation of respiratory conditions, while also enabling remote assessment through smartphones or other microphones. Performance depends on recording quality, background noise, population diversity, and careful validation against established clinical measures.
