Multi-wavelength Light Curves

Multi-wavelength light curves are time-dependent measurements of an astronomical source’s brightness across multiple regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, revealing behavior that a single wavelength may miss. Researchers construct them by synchronizing flux observations from instruments operating at different bands, then comparing variability, delays, and changes in spectral energy distribution over time. These data help identify emission mechanisms, track transient events, and connect activity across radio, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations. In engineering, multi-wavelength light curves support the design and calibration of detectors, observatories, data pipelines, and time-series analysis methods used to monitor complex astrophysical systems.

The de Broglie Wavelength

In the macroscopic world, objects that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye follow the rules of classical physics. A billiard ball moving on a table will behave like a particle; it will continue traveling in a straight line unless it collides with another ball, or it is acted on by some other force, such as friction. The ball has a well-defined position and velocity or well-defined momentum, p = mv, which is defined by mass m and velocity v at any given moment. This is the typical...

Size-Exclusion Chromatography with Multi-Angle Light Scattering for Protein Oligomers

This video describes SEC-MALS, which leverages the abilities of size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and multi-angle light scattering (MALS). In SEC-MALS, the SEC separates proteins or protein complexes based on their size, and the MALS detector determines the average molecular weight by measuring the intensity of the light scattered by the molecule at different angles.

A technique for performing quantitative three-dimensional (3D) imaging for a range of fluid flows is presented. Using concepts from the area of Light Field Imaging, we reconstruct 3D volumes from arrays of images. Our 3D results span a broad range including velocity fields and multi-phase bubble size distributions.
