Nanoindenter Installation

Nanoindenter installation is the process of setting up and configuring a nanoindentation instrument to measure the mechanical response of materials at very small length scales. The system uses a calibrated probe to apply controlled force or displacement to a surface while recording the resulting penetration, requiring precise alignment, stable mounting, and appropriate environmental and vibration control. In engineering, correct installation establishes reliable conditions for measuring hardness, elastic modulus, and deformation behavior in thin films, coatings, microstructures, and advanced materials. Careful setup and calibration improve data quality, support reproducible experiments, and enable meaningful comparisons among materials and manufacturing processes.

Installation of Optical Windows in the Brain of Transgenic Mice to Image Neural Activities

2025

This video demonstrates the brain's neural activity recording through an optical window in transgenic mice. The mice express a fluorescent protein that enables the detection of neural activities. A small portion of the skull is carefully removed to install an optical window, and the skull is then covered with black cement to block light before imaging.

Quantifying the contact area and force applied by an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe tip to a sample surface enables nanoscale mechanical property determination. Best practices to implement AFM cantilever-based nanoindentation in air or fluid on soft and hard samples to measure elastic modulus or other nanomechanical properties are discussed.
