Optical Characterization Setup

An optical characterization setup is an engineered arrangement of light sources, optical components, samples, detectors, and measurement electronics used to quantify how a material or device interacts with light. During operation, controlled illumination is directed toward the sample, while transmitted, reflected, emitted, or scattered signals are collected and converted into measurable data, often as a function of wavelength, angle, or intensity. These systems support evaluation of optical, electronic, and photonic components, including films, sensors, coatings, and light-emitting devices. Careful alignment, calibration, and control of measurement conditions improve data reliability and enable comparison among designs, materials, and fabrication processes.

We report that the diffraction limit of conventional optical lithography can be overcome by exploiting the transitions of organic photochromic derivatives induced by their photoisomerization at low light intensities.1-3 This paper outlines our fabrication technique and two locking mechanisms, namely: dissolution of one photoisomer and electrochemical oxidation.

We develop and characterize a disordered polymer optical fiber that uses transverse Anderson localization as a novel waveguiding mechanism. This microstructured fiber can transport a small localized beam with a radius that is comparable to the beam radius of conventional optical fibers.

We demonstrate the use of various microscopy methods that are useful in observing the calcification of a tubeworm, Hydroides elegans, as well as locating and characterizing the first calcified material. Live microscopy and electron microscopy are used together to provide functional and material information that are important in studying biomineralization.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is an emerging technology capable of imaging optical absorption contrasts in vivo with cellular resolution and sensitivity. Here, we provide a visualized instruction on the experimental protocols of OR-PAM, including system configuration, system alignment, typical in vivo experimental procedures, and functional imaging schemes.
