Phase Sequence Matching

Phase sequence matching is the process of aligning the order in which alternating-current phases reach their voltage peaks, a requirement for safely connecting three-phase electrical systems. It works by comparing the phase rotation of two sources, typically with a phase-sequence indicator or synchronized measurements, and correcting mismatched phase connections before paralleling equipment. Proper matching prevents reverse motor rotation, abnormal torque, circulating currents, and potential equipment damage. In engineering, the practice supports generator synchronization, motor installation, transformer connections, and reliable operation of industrial power systems. Understanding phase order also helps engineers diagnose wiring errors and maintain compatibility across interconnected electrical networks.

Sign Test for Matched Pairs

2025

The sign test for matched pairs offers a robust method for comparing two paired samples, often for the effects of an intervention in one of them. This method is very useful in situations where the underlying distribution of the data is unknown. The test compares two related samples—often pre- and post-treatment measurements on the same subjects—to determine if there are significant differences in their median values. To conduct the sign test, we first calculate the differences in value between...

Phase Diagrams

A phase diagram combines plots of pressure versus temperature for the liquid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-gas phase-transition equilibria of a substance. These diagrams indicate the physical states that exist under specific conditions of pressure and temperature and also provide the pressure dependence of the phase-transition temperatures (melting points, sublimation points, boiling points). Regions or areas labeled solid, liquid, and gas represent single phases, while lines or curves represent...

Solid Phase Synthesis

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...

Phase Transitions

Whether solid, liquid, or gas, a substance's state depends on the order and arrangement of its particles (atoms, molecules, or ions). Particles in the solid pack closely together, generally in a pattern. The particles vibrate about their fixed positions but do not move or squeeze past their neighbors. In liquids, although the particles are closely spaced, they are randomly arranged. The position of the particles are not fixed—that is, they are free to move past their neighbors to occupy...
