Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a degenerative joint disease that develops after injury to cartilage, bone, ligaments, or other joint structures, making it a major target for biomedical engineering and regenerative research. Following trauma, altered joint mechanics can increase focal loading and instability, while inflammation and biochemical signaling promote cartilage breakdown, synovial changes, and progressive remodeling of surrounding bone. Engineers use imaging, biomechanical testing, computational models, biomaterials, and tissue-engineered constructs to study these interacting processes and evaluate interventions. This work supports earlier diagnosis, injury-specific implants, rehabilitation strategies, and therapies designed to preserve joint function before irreversible degeneration occurs.

The open medial femoral condyle impact model in rabbits is reliable for studying post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) and novel therapeutic strategies to mitigate PTOA progression. This protocol generates an isolated cartilage defect of the posterior medial femoral condyle in rabbits using a carriage-based drop tower with an impactor head.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium. Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...

(2017)This video demonstrates the use of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) to alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It begins by identifying reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a key factor contributing to the overactivation of the amygdala and heightened fear responses. By applying targeted...
